The New York Yankees have already clinched a spot in the 2024 playoffs and hold a 5.5-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East.
With a record of 91 wins and 64 losses, the Yankees are preparing their roster for the postseason.
Before their game against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, the Yankees made 2 roster moves.
According to New York Yankees on ‘X,’ right-hand pitcher Jake Cousins was placed on the 15-day injured list and right-hand pitcher Clayton Beeter was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Placed RHP Jake Cousins on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 9/20) with a right pec strain.
• Recalled RHP Clayton Beeter (#85) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre— New York Yankees (@Yankees) September 22, 2024
Cousins has appeared in 37 games for the Yankees in 2024 and holds a 2.37 earned run average with 53 strikeouts in 38.0 innings pitched.
With the move retroactive to September 20th, Cousins will be shut down for the remainder of the regular season with a pectoral strain.
Beeter was called up from Triple-A and has only appeared in 1 game with the Major League club where he pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 hit, 0 earned runs, and 0 strikeouts.
His stats for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre include appearing in 10 games where he had a 2.25 earned run average with 51 strikeouts in 36.0 innings pitched.
The Yankees will hope that Beeter can carry over his success in the Minors to the Major Leagues and contribute to their bullpen.
They hope to get Cousins back for the postseason, but the severity of the pectoral injury is uncertain at this time.
The Yankees are looking to win the American League East for the first time since 2022 and make a run to their first World Series appearance since 2009 when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies.
