The New York Yankees hold a 4-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.
With a record of 89 wins and 64 losses, the Yankees have already clinched a playoff spot as they seek their 2nd division title in the last 3 seasons.
The Yankees will take on the Oakland Athletics on Friday at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California.
According to New York Yankees on ‘X,’ the Yankees reinstated right-hand pitcher Cody Poteet from the 60-day injured list and designated right-hand pitcher Ron Marinaccio for assignment.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Returned RHP Cody Poteet from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Designated RHP Ron Marinaccio for assignment.— New York Yankees (@Yankees) September 20, 2024
Poteet was on the 60-day injured list with a triceps injury since mid-June.
Although Poteet was reinstated, the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre which was where he was on his rehab assignment.
When Poteet was with the Major League club, he posted a record of 3 wins and 0 losses with a 2.14 earned run average and 13 strikeouts in 21.0 innings pitched.
Along with the activation of Poteet, Marinaccio was designated for assignment after a decline in numbers since 2022.
Marinaccio has a record of 1 win and 0 losses in 2024 with a 3.86 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.
These numbers dropped drastically from his 2022 season where he had a 2.05 earned run average with 56 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched.
Both of these moves are to prepare the Yankees bullpen for the postseason where they may look for Poteet to appear in some high-leverage situations.
Poteet could potentially be another option in the bullpen if the struggles of former closer Clay Holmes continue.
The Yankees will look to button down their bullpen ahead of the 2024 playoffs.
