Recent history has not been kind to the Detroit Tigers as they have not made the postseason since 2014.
Even in the 2024 season, the Tigers were not headed in the right direction being 11 games back of a wild-card spot 6 weeks ago.
The Tigers ended up trading one of their better starting pitchers Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline in July.
However, things have turned in the Tigers’ favor recently as they are currently in a playoff position.
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, things have changed drastically in the American League Central for the final 2 wild-card spots in the American League.
The tide has dramatically turned in the AL Central for the final 2 wild-card spots:
The Minnesota Twins have lost 21 of their last 32 games.
The Kansas City Royals have lost 7 consecutive games, including all six games on their homestand.
And the Detroit Tigers have gone 27-11… https://t.co/BITk1qrmnL— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) September 22, 2024
Just over a month ago, the Tigers were 11 games back of a playoff spot in the American League.
They received a little help from 2 other American League Central teams the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals.
The Twins have lost 21 of their last 32 games while the Royals have lost 7 straight including 6 straight at home.
With a record of 27 wins and 11 losses since August 11th, the Tigers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball and have climbed into a tie with the Royals for the 2nd wild-card spot.
After beating the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday 4-3, the Tigers have a record of 82 wins and 74 losses which is their most wins in a season since they won 86 games in 2016.
With only 6 games remaining, the Tigers are in a prime position to sneak their way into the 2024 playoffs with hopes of making a World Series run.
